On Saturday, September 23, Scout Victoria Arnett and 20 volunteers worked together to complete Arnett’s Eagle Scout Project. The project consisted of cleaning and enhancing the Veterans Memorial Cemetery area surrounding the billboard alongside Highway 285, near McCoy’s. The billboard will later be used to promote the McBride Veterans Memorial.

Partnering with Keep Chaves County Beautiful, volunteer Scouts from Troop 7, Troop 149, and Venture Crew 30 laid new landscaping features, cleared over 5 bags of trash, as well as cleared and retired two US flags.

Victoria Arnett is a 5th Classman (HS Sophomore) at New Mexico Military Institute and was recently recognized by the superintendent for completing her freshman year at NMMI with a 4.0. GPA. At NMMI, Cadet Arnett is involved in S.T.E.M. Club, Math Club, English Club, Adventuring Crew 30, the NMMI Track and Field Team as well as the Swim Team. She has also been a chaplain aide and is currently serving as Secretary of the NMMI Catholic Chapel Council that has weekly Mass at the Alumni Memorial Chapel. Victoria’s brother William and father Bobby are both Eagle Scouts and she accompanied them on countless Scout activities as a child. When the Scouts BSA opened its curriculum to females, Victoria was the first girl in Chaves County to sign up. She has been a Scout since 2019 and will complete the requirements to earn her Eagle Scout award this school year. Victoria is on track to be the first female Eagle Scout in Chaves County. Victoria credits Scouting with building her confidence, creating positive peer relationships, leadership skills, and civic awareness through community service.

Scout Volunteer Leader Bobby Arnett shared, “Five more Scouts are expected to finish their Eagle Scout Project before the end of the school year.” With leadership and community support, our Scouts are working to support important community organizations like our Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

We look forward to sharing more good news about Scouts doing good turns in our area.”
