2025 Rio Hondo Pinewood Derby: Cubs Scouts Showcase Creativity

On Saturday, April 19th, Cub Scouts from across the Rio Hondo District gathered for the cherished tradition of the Pinewood Derby.

These young Scouts have the opportunity to design, build, and race their own wooden cars. This exciting event not only fosters creativity and craftsmanship but also encourages friendly competition among participants.

Preparation for the Derby

In the weeks leading up to the event, participants received a Pinewood Derby kit, which included a block of wood, wheels, and axles. Cubs are encouraged to take an active role in the design and construction of their cars, which can be customized in countless ways. From painting and decorating to shaping the wood for optimal aerodynamics, the possibilities are endless.

Categories and Awards

During the Pinewood Derby, cars were judged via ballot and judge in various categories, that included:

  • Fastest Looking Derby Car

  • Most Colorful Derby Car

  • Best Derby Car Theme

  • Most Creative Derby Car

  • Cub Scout Spirit Award

  • Good Sport Award

These awards inspire Scouts to give their best effort and highlight the significance of sportsmanship and respect for other competitors.

Community Involvement

The event is not just a competition; it is a celebration of community spirit. This year's Pinewood Derby was hosted at the Boys and Girls Club of Chaves County. Their support was pivotal to the success of the event. Dion's also helped to sponsor the event by providing door prizes.

Fun Memories

The 2025 Rio Hondo Pinewood Derby was an exhilarating event filled with excitement, creativity, and camaraderie as Cub Scouts raced their handmade cars down the track. Cub Scout families participated in a competition but also building lasting memories and friendships. This cherished tradition will continue to inspire young Scouts and teach them valuable lessons that extend far beyond the race itself.
