On February 1, 2025, the Conquistador Council celebrated 100 years of Scouting at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell.
Hosted by Mike Winters, the event honored the dedicated volunteers who serve across the 7 counties of Southeastern New Mexico and drive the movement’s growth.
The evening highlighted how volunteer leadership fuels Scouting’s success. From troop leaders and mentors to committee members, countless volunteers have sparked innovation with expanded training programs, new activity days, and fresh initiatives. In 2024, a second fall Cub Activity Day was a resounding success—a model the council plans to expand in 2025.

The banquet also recognized three outstanding award winners for their exceptional contributions. Jessica Michelle Siddall of Hobbs was honored for her transformative volunteer work, John J. “Jack” Schonberger from Eastern New Mexico received accolades for his lifelong commitment to the spiritual values of Scouting, and Mike Hunter of Roswell was named Council Alumnus of the Year for his exemplary dedication and mentorship.
Additional highlights of the evening included updates on upcoming leader trainings, district day camps, camporees, and signature events like Mulligan Stew. Significant improvements to camp properties—ranging from new facilities at Camp Jim Murray and Dowling Aquatic Base to infrastructure upgrades at Wehinahpay Mountain Camp—underscore the council’s commitment to offering safe, engaging, and memorable outdoor adventures.
As the Conquistador Council marks its centennial, the spirit of Scouting remains as vibrant as ever. The event served as a powerful reminder that while tradition anchors us, the energy and vision of our volunteers propel us forward into the next 100 years of adventure, leadership, and service.
