Building Forward: Growth, Vision, and a Year of Opportunity

By Karl Shelton, Scout Executive

As we step into a new year, the Conquistador Council does so with momentum, purpose, and a clear vision for the future of Scouting in Southeast New Mexico.

Before looking ahead, it’s worth noting that 2025 was another year of growth for our council. We again experienced membership growth and new unit development—evidence that families continue to see Scouting as a place where young people belong and thrive. We also celebrated our centennial in style with a successful Council Gala, bringing together volunteers, alumni, community leaders, and supporters to honor our past and invest in the future. That evening was more than a celebration—it was a reminder that Scouting remains strong because of the people who believe in it.

With that foundation, our focus now turns squarely toward what comes next.

Our vision for the year ahead is centered on retention through excellence. Retention isn’t achieved through reminders or recharter deadlines—it’s earned through top-quality programs that excite youth and support families. When Scouts are challenged, engaged, and having fun, they stay. When parents see growth, confidence, and leadership in their children, they stay invested.

That means delivering great programs at every level. From Cub Scouts discovering the outdoors, to Scouts BSA pushing themselves on campouts and high-adventure experiences, to older youth finding leadership and purpose through Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Exploring—every program matters, and every experience counts.

One of the premier experiences Scouting offers is the National Jamboree, and we are excited to promote participation in the upcoming Jamboree. For many Scouts, Jamboree becomes a defining moment—one that builds friendships, confidence, and a deeper connection to Scouting. It is also one of our strongest retention tools, showing youth the full scope of what Scouting can be. If you have eligible Scouts, now is the time to encourage them to take part in this extraordinary opportunity.

As we move forward, our commitment is clear: strong units, supported leaders, and meaningful experiences for every Scout. We will continue to invest in program quality, leader training, and council events that add value and strengthen local units.

The future of Scouting in the Conquistador Council is bright—not by accident, but by intention. Together, let’s make this a year where Scouts stay engaged, programs shine, and young people discover just how far Scouting can take them.

Yours in Scouting,

Karl Shelton
