Looking Ahead to an Exciting New Year

Karl Shelton Scout Executive

As we welcome the start of 2025, I find myself filled with gratitude for the incredible year we’ve just completed and excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead. This year promises to be an extraordinary one for the Conquistador Council as we celebrate Scouting, recognize excellence, and honor the rich legacy of our council.

January will be a busy and exciting month, as we kick off the year with three district dinners to celebrate the incredible contributions of our volunteers. At these events, we’ll be presenting the District Award of Merit—the highest recognition a district can bestow on a volunteer. These awards highlight the dedication, hard work, and passion of the individuals who make a significant impact in their communities and help bring the Scouting program to life.

These district dinners set the stage for our council-wide Annual Dinner and Recognition Event on February 1. This special evening is more than just a gathering—it’s an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our Scouts, volunteers, and community members who exemplify the Scout Oath and Law throughout the year.

At the Annual Dinner, we will be presenting two of Scouting’s most distinguished honors: the Silver Beaver Award, recognizing volunteers for exceptional service to youth, and the Council Duty to God Award, which will be presented for the very first time. These awards reflect the core values of Scouting and celebrate those who inspire us through their service and faith.

Before the formal program begins, we invite all alumni and friends of Scouting to join us for a social mixer. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate the lifelong bonds formed through Scouting. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or reconnecting with the council for the first time, your presence will make this evening even more memorable.

The Annual Dinner and district events are just the beginning of what will be a historic year for the Conquistador Council. As we prepare to commemorate our 100th anniversary, we’ll have countless opportunities to honor the past, celebrate the present, and envision the future of Scouting in Southeast New Mexico.

I hope you’ll join us at these upcoming events as we recognize and celebrate the extraordinary people who make Scouting possible. Let’s make 2025 a year of connection, recognition, and celebration as we continue to deliver the life-changing programs of Scouting to the youth and families we serve.

Here’s to a wonderful New Year filled with adventure, growth, and service!
