One critical safety measure that should never be overlooked is the use of proper eye protection. Whether it’s outdoor projects, service work, or hands-on activities, protecting your eyes is crucial since we only have one set of eyes. Here are some key scenarios when Scouts should be wearing eye protection and what type to use:
When to Wear Eye Protection
Mowing Lawns: Flying debris such as rocks, sticks, or dirt can cause serious eye injuries. Always wear safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes from potential hazards while mowing.
Weed Eating: Weed Eaters can send small stones or debris flying at high speeds. Safety glasses or face shields provide necessary protection, reducing the risk of eye injuries.
Chopping Wood: Splinters or chips can easily fly toward the face when chopping or splitting wood. Safety glasses are essential to prevent these sharp fragments from causing eye damage.
Using a Grinder: Grinders generate sparks and tiny metal shards that can easily become airborne. Always wear safety glasses with side shields or a face shield when working with grinders.
