Mason Dhenin completed his New Paint Eagle Scout project on November 24th, 2023. His project benefited St. Peter Lutheran Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico – repainting the 27-foot standing cross that sits between the sanctuary building and parking lot. This cross is a large landmark that is visible from HWY 285 and is constructed out of steel beams welded together to form the cross. The installation of this cross occurred in the 1960’s, but unfortunately the cross has not been maintained due to safety limitations and the height of the cross.
Organizing the Eagle Scout Project
Mason organized his Eagle Scout Project to repaint this cross – which saved St. Peter’s Lutheran Church significant financial resources that were able to be directed to necessary day to day operating needs. The scope of his project was to remove rust spots and old paint to apply a new coat of paint to the steel cross.

Mason was awarded his Eagle Scout Rank with Troop 270 on December 16, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Carlsbad New Mexico. Mason serves as the Troop 270 Senior Patrol leader in multiple terms, serves as Captain in the Carlsbad High School swim team and plays flute in the band. He desires to attend Purdue University – and with his outstanding academic record with a 4.1 gpa – he will continue to provide leadership and excellence in his future.
